In Harper Lee’s book, To Kill A Mockingbird, there are quite a few examples of racism. During this time in history racism was acceptable. Racism is a key theme in her book.
Not only those who have been black, but also these who affiliated with blacks, have been regarded as inferior. Atticus, a lawyer, who defended blacks in court, was mocked. An instance of this is when Mrs. Dubose mentioned, “Your father’s [Atticus] no better than the niggers and trash he operates for!” Mr. Dolphus Raymond was also criticized for affiliating with blacks, particularly black females. Example is when Jem stated, “He likes ‘em [blacks] greater ‘n he likes us [whites], I reckon.” Basically, you have been black if you “liked” blacks.
Blacks, mainly because they have been viewed as inferior, have been anticipated to do everything for whites. Every thing had to be excellent, devoid of excuse. Even when Calpurnia, a Finch family pal, did not make the great cup of coffee, she was mocked.
